Laboratory of Physics of Oil and Gas Reservoirs

The educational laboratory of oil and gas reservoir physics operates based on the Department of Extraction at Ivano-Frankivsk National Technical University of Oil and Gas. The laboratory is located in room 0520 of the university with a total area of 54 m² and serves as the main practical platform for studying the physical properties of hydrocarbon reservoirs.

Here, students master laboratory analysis methods of core material—the same methods used in industrial geological laboratories of oil and gas companies. Working with real rock samples allows them to gain practical skills necessary for evaluating reservoir properties and making informed decisions in the exploration and development of deposits.

Laboratory Equipment

Installation for determining the coefficient of open porosity by the method of I.A. Preobrazhensky allows determining the volume of interconnected pores in a rock sample. Porosity is one of the key reservoir parameters characterizing its ability to contain oil, gas, or water. The Preobrazhensky method is based on saturating the sample with liquid followed by precise measurement of the absorbed fluid volume.

Installation for determining the coefficient of absolute permeability of rocks (cores) designed to measure the ability of the rock to transmit fluid through itself under a pressure differential. Permeability is a fundamental parameter in the calculation of reserves and field development design: the productivity of the well and the efficiency of extraction directly depend on it.

Installation for Determining the Carbonate Content of Rocks by the Gasometric Method allows determining the content of carbonate minerals in a rock sample. Carbonate content affects the mineralogical composition of the reservoir, its strength, and behavior during acid treatment of the well — an important method of production intensification.

Educational Process

Праactical classes in technological disciplines of the department are conducted in the laboratory. Students perform laboratory work to determine the main filtration and capacity properties of reservoir rocks, learn to process and interpret the obtained data, and also correlate the results of laboratory analysis with the geological and industrial characteristics of real deposits.
