The educational and professional program “Power Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Electromechanics” of the first (bachelor’s) level of higher education is implemented in Department of Electrical Engineering of Ivano-Frankivsk National Technical University of Oil and Gas in the specialty 141 “Electrical Power Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Electromechanics.” The department has been in operation since 1964 and has trained over 3,000 electrical engineers whose knowledge and work ensure the functioning of Ukraine’s energy system.

Why choose this program
Electropower Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Electromechanics are fundamental fields that ensure the stable development of modern society and industry. No sector can function without electrical engineering: from the oil and gas complex and industry to medicine, transportation, and municipal infrastructure. This is why the demand for qualified electrical engineers remains consistently high even in the most challenging economic times.
The program provides students with knowledge and practical skills in the following areas:
- Design, modernization, and maintenance of electrical systems and networks, including “Smart Grid”.
- Implementation of energy-efficient solutions and optimization of energy consumption at enterprises.
- Working with renewable energy sources — solar and wind — and their integration into the overall energy system.
- Development and implementation of electromechanical systems for industry, transport, construction, and oil and gas extraction.
- Relay protection and automation, frequency regulation of electric drive, automated electricity metering.
Where Graduates Work
Graduates of the department successfully work in leading energy companies in Ukraine, holding positions as directors, chief engineers, and heads of electrical services. Among the employers are “Prykarpattyaoblenergo,” “Zhytomyroblenergo,” “Chernivtsoblenergo,” “Poltavaoblenergo,” “Ukrenergo,” JSC “Ukrgazvydobuvannya,” “Karpatnaftokhim,” and many other enterprises. A Bachelor of Electrical Engineering can hold positions as:
- electrical engineer, electronics engineer, systems engineer;
- engineer in designing and installing electrical equipment;
- specialist in relay protection and automation;
- engineer for industrial enterprise power supply;
- specialist in energy management and energy auditing;
- engineer in renewable energy.
Educational Process and Partners
The program features a close integration of learning with practice. The department systematically invites practitioners from leading industry companies to conduct open lectures, seminars, and workshops. Students become acquainted with the real working conditions of the electricity market, modern accounting technologies, and the principles of energy systems operation while still in the learning process. Among the regular partner stakeholders are JSC “Prykarpattiaoblenergo,” LLC “Schneider Electric Ukraine,” LLC “ABB LTD,” “Karpatnaftokhim,” and DMP “Ivano-Frankivskteplokomunenergo.”
For practical training, the department has established over 20 specialized laboratories, including relay protection, frequency regulation of electric drive, and automated electricity metering laboratories.
Educational Content
The program combines a strong fundamental base with specialized engineering disciplines. Mandatory courses include the theory of electrical and magnetic circuits, electromagnetic field theory, electrical machines and apparatuses, power semiconductor technology, electrical systems and networks, high voltage engineering, basics of relay protection and automation, basics of electric drives, the electrical part of power stations and substations, mathematical modeling in electric power engineering, unconventional and renewable energy sources, computer technology and CAD in power engineering, fundamentals of enterprise power supply, basics of metrology and electrical measurements, electrical safety.
The elective component allows students to deepen their preparation in accordance with their own career goals by selecting courses from departmental and university-wide catalogs through the electronic “Dean’s Office+” system.
International Cooperation
The department actively collaborates with international partners. In particular, in cooperation with New Energy Performance (Norway), programs are implemented for training experts in the field of energy, with certificates issued and credits awarded under the ECTS system. Students have access to an international academic environment and up-to-date knowledge on global energy development trends.
Practical Training
Educational, industrial, and pre-diploma internships are conducted at the department’s partner enterprises. Students also have the opportunity to independently choose the place of internship by providing a referral letter from the enterprise. The program concludes with diploma design — an independent engineering project solving a real task in the field of electric power engineering.
