The Ivano-Frankivsk National Technical University of Oil and Gas has been actively engaged in international activities for over two decades. During this time, the university has participated in dozens of international projects within the largest educational and research programs of the European Union, implemented cross-border initiatives with partners from Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, the United Kingdom, and other countries, and has become one of the most active Ukrainian universities in terms of completed TEMPUS projects. International integration is a strategic priority for IFNTUOG — regardless of circumstances, the university continues to expand partnerships and attract European resources for the development of education, science, and innovation.
Erasmus+ Program
Participation in Erasmus+ includes both educational mobility and capacity-building projects. Among the current initiatives (2025–2028) is the project EduRob(№ 101179514), aimed at developing the digital competence of future educators by introducing robotics into the curricula of educational institutions in Ukraine. The university is also a participant in the consortium UNIVERSEH Extended for Ukraine— initiatives that unite leading technical universities in Europe around the theme of space engineering and related technologies.
A separate achievement is the program IT4SEE— joint master’s double degree program between IFNTUOG and London South Bank University (United Kingdom). This is a rare format of academic cooperation for Ukrainian technical universities, providing students the opportunity to receive a European-standard diploma without going abroad for the entire period of study.
Cross-border Cooperation Romania–Ukraine
Partnership with Romanian universities and organizations is one of the most stable directions of IFNTUOG’s international activities. As part of the program Interreg NEXT Romania–Ukraine 2021–2027The university is implementing two projects.
Project ATEd (ROUA00183 — “Transboundary Academic Technological Education”) — where IFNTUNG is the main beneficiary — aimed at developing modern competencies in the field of digital engineering and robotics. Its visible outcome was the opening of Center for Digital Engineering university with three specialized laboratories. The project partners are the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca and the NGO “Academic Organization for Research, Innovation, and Professional Development” (Romania).
Project ROUA00256 — “Continuous and Cultural Inclusive Education on the Romanian-Ukrainian Border” — is implemented jointly with the Ștefan cel Mare University of Suceava (Romania) and focuses on inclusive and continuous education in the border region.
In the previous programming cycle (2014–2020) under the Romania–Ukraine program, the university implemented three projects:Ro-Ua TADRI(cross-border academic development for research and innovation), which laid the foundation for the Center for Innovative Development; a project to promote objects historical and cultural heritage of border regions; and project on partnership for climate change mitigation.
Cross-border Cooperation Hungary–Slovakia–Romania–Ukraine
Within the Interreg program of four countries, the university participates in ongoing projects for the preservation and promotion of the shared Carpathian cultural heritage —Caprathian cultural route and Root4Dig.(digitization of the region’s cultural roots for future generations).
During the 2014–2020 cycle, IFNTUOG implemented four projects of this program, including— energy recovery from solid municipal waste using thermal conversion methods cross-border network of energy-sustainable universities, regional center for monitoring the impact of electrical installations on the environment, as well as a development project Carpathian Cultural Route. In 2011–2015, three more program projects were implemented, including management of areas contaminated with petroleum products, and cross-border technology transfer network.
EU Framework Programs for Research and Innovation
IFNTUOG is a participant in the EU Framework Research Programs. In Horizon 2020 university participated in the project (№ 831748) — building a proactive network of national contact points in the field of clean and efficient energy (societal challenge 3 of the Horizon 2020 program). In 7th Framework Programme(FP7) university implemented the projec(2014–2017) connected with developing an effective path from research to innovation in cooperation between EU countries and the Eastern Partnership in the field of energy efficiency.
TEMPUS Program
Participation of IFNTUNG in the TEMPUS program began in 2006 and continued until its completion. Overall, the university has implemented more than 10 TEMPUS projects, placing it among the most active universities in Ukraine in this program. The project themes included the implementation of the ECTS system, the development of student mobility, innovative entrepreneurial education, production automation, distance learning, and the enhancement of higher education regulatory frameworks. Key partners included universities and organizations from Austria, Sweden, Germany, Belgium, and Serbia.
British Council Creative Spark Program
In 2018–2021, the university implemented a project of British Council — a five-year initiative to support inter-university partnerships for the development of entrepreneurial skills and the creative economy in seven countries: Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Georgia.
IFNTUOG in the international space
The accumulated experience of international project activity has made IFNTUOG a recognized partner for universities and organizations of the European Union. The results of these projects are materially embodied in the university’s educational infrastructure: the Innovation Development Center, the Digital Engineering Center, and upgraded educational laboratories—all made possible through international funding and partnership support. The university continues to attract new grants and expand its network of partners, consistently pursuing a course toward European integration, even in wartime conditions. This contributes to the positive image of Ukraine as a country with strong intellectual and technological potential, ready to actively participate in processes of reconstruction and innovative development.
